An NDC of a different color.
The Compass Center in the Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle provides services for homeless men.
Compass Center
Seattle, WA
“When you’re working with people who already feel disenfranchised and left out and less than, to try and raise their self esteem and make them feel good about themselves in an environment that is falling apart… is a completely different experience than doing it in a facility that is like this, that allows them to feel like ‘I might be a first class citizen...I’m equal to the other human beings in the country, and maybe I have a chance,’”
- Judy Sebastian, CC Substance Abuse Counselor.
When Compass Center, an important transitional housing and homeless service center in Seattle’s distressed Pioneer Square neighborhood was destroyed in the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake, the city and community wasted no time in planning its repair. NDC's HEDC New Markets made a $4.6 million investment as part of a comprehensive $25 million residential and social services project involving 14 different financing sources and years of pre-development work. Completed in mid-2005, the project involved the renovation of the original structure and the addition of a new facility. Together, the buildings provide:
- Transitional housing for 78 men for up to one year
- 23 units of permanent low-income housing
- Space to prepare 500 to 1,000 meals for the homeless daily
- Mail and banking services for 500 individuals
- Hygiene services for 200 to 300 individuals daily
- Mental health services
- Substance abuse counseling and support
- Wellness services
- Case management
- A home for two additional homeless service organizations: the Seattle-King County Coalition for the Homeless and Occupation: Next Step
- Community space for residents
The building is making a significant difference in the lives of its residents and the ease with which employees provide services.
